When we talk about the future, we often talk about young people as though their time has not yet come.

"They are the leaders of tomorrow."

But perhaps we need to change the way we think.

Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow. They are already influencing families, schools, workplaces, communities, and the world around them today.

Leadership does not begin when someone receives a title. It begins when a person takes responsibility, makes good choices, speaks up for what is right, and uses their abilities to make a positive difference.

Today's young people are growing up in a rapidly changing world. Technology, social media, climate change, economic uncertainty, cultural shifts, and global challenges are shaping their experiences in ways previous generations may not fully understand. They need more than instructions about what to do. They need opportunities to participate, ask questions, solve problems, and lead.

Young people also need adults who are willing to listen to them.

Too often, conversations about youth focus on what is wrong with the younger generation. We talk about their screen time, their behaviour, their choices, or what they are supposedly missing. But we sometimes forget to ask a more important question:

What are we doing to help them become the people we want them to be?

Leadership is developed through experience.

Give a young person responsibility, and they learn accountability. Give them an opportunity to volunteer, and they learn service. Allow them to organise an activity, and they learn planning and teamwork. Let them make appropriate mistakes, and they learn how to solve problems and recover from setbacks.

Young people do not need adults to clear every obstacle from their path. They need guidance, encouragement, boundaries, and opportunities to discover what they are capable of achieving.

Families have an important role in this process. A home where children are encouraged to express their ideas, make responsible decisions, and contribute to family life becomes a training ground for leadership.

Schools and communities have a role too. Youth programmes, mentorship, sports, cultural activities, skills training, volunteering, and entrepreneurship opportunities can help young people discover their strengths and develop confidence.

We must also remember that leadership is not about being the loudest person in the room. A good leader knows how to listen. A good leader respects people who are different. A good leader can admit when they are wrong. A good leader understands that influence comes with responsibility.

Young people should also be encouraged to use technology responsibly. The same digital platforms that can distract them can also become tools for learning, creativity, entrepreneurship, advocacy, and positive social change. What matters is helping them understand the power they already have.

The world does not need young people who are simply prepared to take over existing systems. It needs young people who are prepared to improve them.

That requires us to stop underestimating them.

Let us give young people a seat at the table. Let us listen to their ideas, guide them when necessary, challenge them to grow, and trust them with meaningful responsibilities.

Because the future is not some distant place we will eventually reach.

The future is being shaped by what young people are learning, doing, and becoming today.
